Chapter Twenty-two

As we fly, I notice something.

“Azrael,” I say, “why do I see rocks occasionally tumbling down from the hillside? Also, I noticed dust shaking free from some of the structures in the city.”

“These are new events, Sam. Something that is of great concern to all of us. They are sunquakes, if you will, and they have begun only just recently. They are unnoticeable to your scientists at home, but here, we feel them.”

“How recently?”

“Only a week or so, Earth time.”

“About the length the incarnation of the sun has been gone.”

“It appears so. We were unaware of his disappearance, until you showed up. Now we know, and understand there might be a link.”

I raise my eyebrows... until I remember that if one angel knows something, they all know something. A true hive mind. By my appearing here now and giving Azrael the rundown of what I knew, that information was instantly broadcast to all angels. Including my son, no doubt. But not Ishmael. That big, beautiful rebel had been removed from the angel network. No doubt similar to when an employee gets fired and is removed from accessing the company’s database.

“But why would his disappearance cause earthquakes—sunquakes—here?”

“We do not know, Samantha. We simply live in the space provided for us. Additionally, none of us have had direct communication with the Sun itself.”

“Why not?”

“To reach the sun is an ordeal that we cannot survive.”

“But I can?”

“Maybe.”

“I don’t like the sound of that,” I say.

Azrael looks at me, his dark locks flowing behind him as he flies. “Nor should you, Sam. We are getting close.”

“Close to what?”

“Easier to show you.”

Swallowing and feeling my heartbeat pick up—which it never really does—I drift back behind him. Following behind this glorious, dark angel should have been a fascinating experience. And it is, kind of. Mostly, I’m wondering where he’s leading me.

The phrase ‘where angels fear to tread’ pops in my brain.
